“Harnessing our global team’s passion, expertise, and experience to ensure youth have ownership of their future — that’s what gets me up in the morning.
At the Akamai Foundation, our work is never done.”
Kara DiGiacomo
Executive Director, Akamai Foundation
When Akamai was founded in 1998, the “dot-com” boom was in full swing. The company’s founders were determined to create an organization that could solve some of the world’s largest technical challenges, while also supporting and uplifting the communities in which they lived and worked. Akamai’s founders saw the value in sharing their resources, expertise, and time with the world around them. The Akamai Foundation was born out of those values.
“Giving back” became an intrinsic part of Akamai’s culture, and has remained one of the company’s core values ever since. Employees bring this value to life by volunteering individually and as a team, engaging with the local educational programs, and awarding grants to nonprofits around the world. Akamai announced a US$50 million endowment for the Akamai Foundation in 2018 followed by an additional US$20 million in 2020. This funding expanded the Akamai Foundation’s focus and scale, to enable access to STEM education for underrepresented groups around the globe.
The Akamai Foundation continues to grow, finding new ways to deepen and expand its impact with each passing year. Whether in partnership with Akamai’s employee resource groups (ERGs), via initiatives such as Danny Lewin Community Care Days, or through the Akamai Foundation’s dozens of grantee partnerships, the focus has remained the same: to live Akamai’s purpose of “making life better for billions of people, trillions of times a day,” and to give back thoughtfully.
