Scientific Adventures for Girls

Scientific Adventures for Girls works to remove systemic barriers and ensure that all girls have the opportunity to fully participate in STEM education.
Scientific Adventures for Girls (SAfG) offers high-quality STEM programs to girls at Title I elementary schools, building trust with students, families, and educators. SAfG’s teaching model focuses on hands-on learning, collaboration, and confidence-building, while connecting girls with female STEM role models who reflect their identities and communities.

"I like Scientific Adventures for Girls because we get to try things and it’s okay to mess up. It makes me feel like I’m good at science."

Collective impact

2025
When SAfG first started at one Title I elementary school in Oakland, California, many girls were hesitant to speak up or take risks and often said they “weren’t good at science.” By the third year, teachers were telling SAfG staff that girls who had participated in SAfG multiple times were leading group projects and showing much more confidence in the classroom. One parent shared that her daughter, who used to shy away from science, started asking for science kits at home and talking about becoming an engineer. Akamai’s support allowed SAfG to return year after year, making it possible to see that change.

2024
The Akamai Foundation’s 2024 support enabled SAfG to continue delivering vital programs, including exciting projects focused on the art of science and technology. SAfG participants met with female STEM architects who shared their career journeys, providing vital role models and demonstrating a sense of belonging in STEM fields. Hands-on experiences and exposure to female STEM professionals are crucial in building girls’ confidence and interest in STEM; SAfG exit surveys show that over 76% of participating students report getting excited about STEM after participating in their programs.
