Stemettes

Stemettes is a social enterprise working across the UK and Ireland to inspire and support girls, young women, and nonbinary young people toward careers in science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM).
Since the organization’s inception in 2013, Stemettes has helped empower young people to become the next generation of innovators and leaders. Stemettes partners with forward-thinking organizations to run intersectional programs, using impactful events and inspirational mentorship to showcase a diversity of people working in STEAM.

"I loved talking to (the staff and mentors) and getting to know about them. I felt connected and understood."

Collective impact

2025
Stemettes introduced diverse role models from Akamai to participants, who learned about their roles and career paths. These events addressed the barriers that young women and nonbinary people face in STEAM. These barriers include themes such as finding a sense of belonging, identifying with STEAM, lacking a community of diverse role models and peers in STEAM, and identifying a need for a broadened awareness of potential career paths.

2024
An Akamai Foundation STEM grant allowed Stemettes to present “STEAM Goals,” an event at Akamai’s London office which introduced participants to a range of potential futures in STEAM. 23 students from 3 schools were chosen to attend sessions with Akamai team members, exploring their STEM journey and career path. Students also took part in an HTML project competition judged by Akamai volunteers. The STEAM Goals event was a success, introducing attendees to potential role models and furnishing their visions of what it would mean to pursue a career in STEAM.
